Romdale
The initial Romdale breeding program was started in 1996 by Harry. The concept at that time was to breed a half Perendale/half Romney to satisfy some of the client's breeding programs. The concept behind this type of genetic cross breeding is to get the best of the maternal traits of the Romney and the Perendale into one package, without compromising breed type as can happen with other composites such as East Freisans, Finns etc.
The strength that Fernvale has in implementing this type of breeding program is due to the size and depth of our commercial ewe flock. We are able to annually screen the very best 300-400 Romney two tooth ewes from a total of 2300 ewes. These are then tagged, identified and transferred into our elite commercial Romney flock to be used for breeding Romdale sires.
Over the years, the main Perendale sires were from the "Mount Guardian" and "Hazledale" studs along with the odd sire from different studs that provided the breed types to meet our criteria. Annually, we spend on average $8000 per annum in purchasing 3 top Perendale stud rams.
