Fernvale
The Fernvale property is the original home property. It was obtained by ballot in the early 1900's by John's father, Harry. Harry also purchased the neighbouring "Heath" block around the same time, but had to relinquish this during the depression.John, Harry's fifth son took over the Fernvale property from his father and in 1951 John re-purchased the "Heath" block. On the day John signed up to purchase the Heath block, he took his father with him. These two properties now make up the Fernvale block as it is today.
The 1946 John purchased 311 Marsh Romney ewes from Waiorongamai Stud in the North Island. This was the beginning of the Fernvale Stud. Harry, John's third son took over the Fernvale property and stud when John divided his properties/entities between all of his children.
Lloyd and Angela are now fourth generation Brenssells to be living on the Fernvale property.
Currently, Fernvale is predominantly used within the overall operation as the base for the Stud and as the finishing block. The total area of the Fernvale block is 760 ha. Rainfall is between 800-850 mls per annum. It has an altitude range of 260-540m above sea level.
